RTD health care reporter selected for fellowship

Martinsville Bulletin - 7/11/2017

Richmond Times-Dispatch health care reporter Katie O'Connor has been selected for a year-long regional fellowship with the Association of Health Care Journalists.

O'Connor joined the RTD news team in March 2016. She is one of 12 honorees from the mid-Atlantic region for a program designed to help journalists localize national health stories and use data to find their own stories.

The fellowship will include all-expenses-paid seminars as well as additional online resources. Seminars include a one-week boot camp at the Missouri School of Journalism, briefings at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and the Health Journalism 2018 conference.

O'Connor and Elizabeth Simpson from The Virginian-Pilot are the only two winners from Virginia. Journalists from West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Kentucky will be joining them in their fellowship.

O'Connor graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2013. In addition to health care reporting, she has covered agriculture, the environment and real estate.
