Boone Walmart takes eggs off shelves due to recall

The Watauga Democrat - 4/18/2018

BOONE - A nationwide recall in eggs due to a salmonella outbreak has resulted in eggs from Walmart's "Great Value" brand being taken off the shelves across the region.

Management at the Boone Walmart did not comment on Tuesday on how many egg cartons were removed or when new shipments would come in. However, the shelves were bare of the Great Value brand eggs, which comprised a majority of the eggs in stock, with a sign saying that the brand was "temporarily out of stock."

According to Ashe County Walmart Dairy Manager Ricky Cheeks, the store has taken 1,300 cartons of eggs off its shelves.

According to multiple associates, the Food Lion locations in Watauga County receive their eggs from Dutt and Wagner in Abingdon, Va., and have not been affected by the outbreak.

Boone's Publix, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Foods and Ingles locations have egg selections from their own store brands and others.

Over 206 million eggs have been recalled nationwide by a North Carolina farm after 22 reported cases of salmonella infections likely linked to the eggs, according to the Federal Food and Drug Administration.

Rose Acre Farms, an Indiana-based company that owns the egg farm in Hyde County, North Carolina, described itself as the second-largest egg producer in the United States. Its farm in Hyde County has about three million egg-laying hens, produces about 2.3 million eggs a day and has a United States Department of Agriculture inspector on site daily, the company said in a statement.

According to the company, this is its first-ever recall.

The egg cartons affected by the recall should be labeled with the plant number P-1065, with packing dates ranging from 011 through 102, or Jan. 11 through April 12.
