Precut melon recalled after multistate outbreak of salmonella infections

The New York Daily News - 6/12/2018

June 11--The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a recall of precut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and fruit salads containing the like on Friday after 60 people became ill with salmonella Adelaide infections.

The recall is linked to Caito Foods, LLC in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to the CDC. But the outbreak has now spread to several other states where incidents of the infection have been identified so far. These include Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

The tainted melon was sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and by Whole Foods/Amazon.

"The investigation is ongoing to determine if products went to additional stores or states," the CDC said.

The agency recommends anyone with melon from these retailers or from the infected foods distributor throw them out immediately or return them where they were purchased for a refund.

Of the 60 infected people, 31 were hospitalized for their symptoms but no deaths have been reported as of Friday.

Salmonella is a common bacterial disease of the intestinal tract. It's typically spread through contact with food or water infected by feces or by eating raw or undercooked poultry, meat or eggs. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, chills, headache and bloody stool.
